Document Summary
Structures: uterus, fallopian tubes (called oviducts in mammals), 2 ovaries disconnected from the rest of the system (ovaries are filled with follicles that each houses a single ovum, the single germ cell) When a follicle ruptures, it releases an ovum into body cavity that gets picked up and travels down fallopian tube to enter the uterus where it can be implanted and fertilization takes place. Inner part of uterus is the endometrium (has lot of plasticity, where implantation takes place, exocrine glandular tissue: outer part of uterus is the myometrium (smooth muscle) One of the key differences between male and female reproductive system is that there is substantial difference in the way gametes are formed and released. Follicle = ball of tissue, starts off quite small then starts expanding massively. Follicle at the very early state = primordial follicle: maturing follicle = the cell layers that surround ovum grows. The cells that surround ovum are called granulosa cells.
