Religion is sometimes grossly underplayed in academic studies. It is impossible to understand the slavery story without looking at the changes in the religious sphere. Professor orren believes that the 2nd great awakening is 2nd only to civil war in its importance. From 1800-1830, the number of baptists increased membership 10fold and the number of churches increased from 500 churches to 2. 5 million. In 1775 there were 1,800 ministers, by 1835 there were 40,000 ministers. During this period the number of preachers per capita more than tripled. This all happened despite a sprawling settlement problem. The growth of upstart churches was also underway. Not just religions from europe, but home-grown ones also (ex: mormonism) Meeting between whitefield and edwards circa 1730- first feeling of unity among colonies. Revival churches (participated in awakening) and conservative churches (began looking more like england) 2nd great awakening camp meeting- way we understand revivalism.
