Document Summary

When he got old: darker, lots of reds, fuzzier, but composition is still good. Details of faces not quite as clear as they used to be. Scholars think this was not a coincidence. Bike accident in 1880, broke his right arm. Arthritis started in 1888 in right hand. Hands became deformed because of arthritis, was often in pain. Presbyopia rather than myopia (difficulty in seeing close-up) Colors rather than the objects retained great importance to kandinsky. Objects not very well-defined, just colors suggesting shapes. Was abstract before the abstract movement existed. Style had a huge influence on modern art in the 20th century, and it was thanks to his particular visual problem. Linear perspective, the vanishing point, and the renaissance. 1300-1600: renewed interest in history, literature, and art. Renewed study of ancient greece and rome. Considered to be the most influential artist on renaissance painting. Figures seem to extend both backward, into the picture, and forward, out of the picture.
