PSYCH 120A Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Modus Tollens, Modus Ponens, Conjunction Fallacy
Document Summary
Pro: takes into consideration all theories, links properties together. Most heuristics are produced by this system. System 2: need to call up previously learned material. Analytical, controlled, conscious monitored, rule governed, serial, more cogn demanding, flexible, generally make little or no use of this system. Heuristics: rule of thumb or mental shortcut often based on past experience. Availability heuristic: things that come to mind more easily we think are more frequent. Judged probability of an event is related to how easily it can be brought to mind. Schwartz: when people were asked to come with more examples of their assertness, they rated themselves as less assertive (hard to come up with more examples think they must not be as assertive as they thought) Representativeness heuristic: people judge probabilities based on the degree that the situation is similar to, or representative of, their stereotypes or knowledge. Base rate neglect/fallacy: tendency to ignore prior probability of an event.
