PSYCH 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Baby Walker, Primitive Reflexes, Spermarche
Document Summary
Babies are born with automatic responses to a particular form of stimulation. Grasping reflex: when something is put in a baby"s hand, they will grasp it. Rooting reflex: turn when something touches the baby"s cheek. Naturally sucks on what touches the lips. Stepping reflex: when a baby"s feet touches a flat surface, they move their feet up and down as if walking. Goes away a couple months after birth. Swimming reflex: move arms and legs up and down as if swimming. Can"t manage their breath to stay alive in a pool of water. Giving children time to play and explore on their own allows them to learn things we never thought to have taught them. Also allows them to improve on their motor skills. Babies who spend more time in a baby walker actually learn to walk later. Don"t allow the child to walk in the correct way, learning to balance and distributing their weight.
