Theory of mind: understanding that other people have different thoughts, feelings and beliefs than you do. Requires child to hold the idea that others may have different beliefs even if it is false information. Sally ann exp: when two people were in the room, a piece of chalk was placed behind a water bottle. One person left and the chalk was moved to the whiteboard. Child that cannot put themselves in someone else"s shoes will say that the person who left will think the chalk is at the whiteboard. Think like a baby exps: cereal box. Related to egocentrism but is more cognitively demanding. Requires understanding of multi-step story and hold it in mind, give a verbal response, etc. If a child has autism, their sibling is more likely to develop autism. Ucla researchers study these siblings from birth and look for differences between those later diagnosed with autism and those not.
