Document Summary

Why well spaced distributed learning is remembered whereas massed learning is not - a scientific shaggy dog story. Two kinds of learning mediated by different brain circuits. Storage initially substantially in hippocampus/med temporal lobe structures but eventually migrates to cortex. Storage substantially in basal ganglia structures (esp striatum) Declarative example: pool of (cid:373)ilky (cid:449)ate(cid:396), the(cid:396)e"s a platfo(cid:396)(cid:373) to stop s(cid:449)i(cid:373)(cid:373)i(cid:374)g with 2 floats -> one is just over platform and the other one is in another place. Float near window marks where platform is to stop swimming. Learning to recognize complex stimuli like contexts. Procedural example: float with diamond marks platform location. Basal ganglia (procedural) and hippocampus (declarative) important, send signals to and from cortex. If you teach rats this process, then remove hippocampus after 1 day, there will be way more errors but after 30 days the information will gradually relocate (consolidation)
