PSYCH 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Planum Temporale, Lateral Sulcus, Spatial Ability
Document Summary
Lecture 11: lateralization, language, and the split brain circuits {2. 22. 17} Major differences between the function of left and right cerebral hemispheres. Cerebral commissures connect 2 halves of the brain. Split brain patients have been studied to understand what happens when these connections are severed. Cerebral lateralization of function: hippocampal commissure, corpus callosum, massa intermedia, anterior commissure, optic chiasm, posterior commissure. Discovery of left contributions- hemisphere damage to aphasia and apraxia. Aphasia: deficit in language comprehension or production due to brain damage, usually on the left. Broca"s area- left inferior prefrontal cortex, damage leads to expressive aphasia. Apraxia: difficulty performing movements when asked to do so out of context, also a consequence of damage on the left. If thirsty a(cid:374)d (cid:449)a(cid:374)t a dri(cid:374)k of (cid:449)ater, (cid:272)a(cid:374) gra(cid:271) (cid:449)ater, (cid:271)ut if you"re asked to the(cid:374) you (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t do it ((cid:374)ot (cid:449)ith right or left hand) Aphasia and apraxia- associated with damage to the left hemisphere.
