Document Summary
He is french (1st non-german we have read) - He was trying to define him self as a secular person (interested in social science), proudly called himself a sociologist. He wanted to show it was a real/different way of looking at the world- there was something unique to the sociological vision. Thought of society as the compilation of individual psychologies. Need to understand the phenomenon that happens when groups of people come together. His most important proclamation was that society exists as a thing in itself, it has a reality, and exerts a force which is more than the sum of its individual parts. It has a standing in the world that cant be described by its constitutive parts (individuals) He tries to demonstrate that there are certain phenomenon in the world produced by society that exert a force on the individuals who live in that society.
