Sociology is the systematic study of human life, groups, and societies -giddens. The first wisdom of sociology is this--things are not what they seem. It ceases to be simple after a while. Social reality turns out to have many layers of meaning. The discovery of each new layer changes the perception of the whole. - Understanding different perspectives through the lens of others we are engaging with; Looking a house from the top, side, or top not using only your own perspective. Informal norms: different norms structured by the different groups that are a part of our lives (ex. how we act with friends vs family) Impact of agency: our ability to act and think independently of constraints imposed by social conditions. Allows us to see the world from different perspectives. Helps us assess the impact of social initiates. We learn to read, understand, and evaluate research. Helps us make informed decisions about our lives.
