Document Summary

What are elements composed of : atoms: building blocks of elements. a). If number of protons = number of neutrons , it is said to a neutral or stable atom. If an atom loses or gains an electron we refer to it as an ion. These are very important biologically in order to establish membrane potential. Electrons orbit within and they will occupy the lowest energy orbitals available to them. Atomic mass #: not same as atomic #: total # of protons and neutrons, all of the elements will have the same # of protons. Not always going to have the same number of neutrons. Isotopes: different neutron number formed of the same element. Use ratios of isotopes to date fossil or archaeological items. Use isotopes to start to put together phylogenies. Ex: whale phylogeny:- we can use isotopes of oxygen. A # of isotopes that are very unstable are known as radioactive.
