They must make the tough decision of going against the wishes of one of their parents or rejecting the wishes of both: these adolescents experience a variety of negative outcomes, including: lower school performance, delinquency, and depression. Inconsistent parenting has been associated with parental conflict. When parents have disagreements they should negotiate their differences rather than presenting their adolescents with conflicting expectations. Parent-adolescent engagement: adolescents are more likely to thrive when they and their parents spend quality time together. For instance, spending more quality time with parents and family reduces adolescent substance abuse: lower levels of parent-adolescent engagement leads to adolescents" maladaptive achievement strategies, some ways in which to spend quality time together include: Participating together in physical activities such as hiking, fishing, skiing, swimming.
