Document Summary

Expectancy x value: a person"s motivation to engage in a task is related to two main factors, their expectancy of being able to achieve the task and the value success would have for them. It is the interaction of all the factors related to these that goes to make up the complex characteristics we call motivation" : expectancy. We are more motivated by tasks for which we feel a high degree of self-efficacy (we feel capable in this area) We are less motivated by tasks in areas in which we feel low self- efficacy (areas in which we feel we have little ability) Self-efficacy is mainly domain specific and is based on both past experiences and messages . We are more motivated by tasks when we hold an incremental view of ability in that area: if i practice playing tennis, i will improve! .
