HIST 1351 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Second Industrial Revolution, Open Shop, Welfare Capitalism
Document Summary
Second industrial revolution: electric motors replace steam power. Electricity makes it smaller and easier to manage: taylorization of factories. Companies continue to find ways to replace humans with machines. Production per worker hour increased by 75%. This is probably because there are more machines and fewer workers: automobile industry. Only 100 stafford"s were made so repair bills were extremely expensive. But cars by ford were cheaper for repairs because they were produced in mass making it cheaper to get parts and have them repaired. By the year 1929 5 million vehicles were sold. So, there were over 6 million cars on the roads. The cars were made up from steel/metal, rubber, and glass. This made those industries bloom because they are supporting the automobile. Another example would be gas stations and mechanics. Road construction will begin in order to make roads easier for cars to drive on: aviation industry. Most of this was commercial in nature.
