The Rise of Napoleon
1. Military career- joined just before revolution
a. “Sister republics”- Satellite States- italy, belgium, switzerland
2. The end of the Directory (1799)
a. France was in chaos- needed order and stability
b. Napoleon overthrew Directory
3. Napoleon as consul (1799) and emperor (1804)
4. Reforms
Peace in Europe - Deals with external threat
Amnesty- people who made war during the revolution are forgiven
Political Allies- made sure his advisors represented many opinions
Centralized Administration- rules evenly applied
The Concordat of 1801- made a treaty with the Pope- Napoleon agreed catholicism
would be the preferred religion of france
The Napoleonic code (1804)- new law system, universal law
Based on some enlightenment ideas

b. Occupation of Vienna
c. Battle of Austerlitz- defeats Austrians had to give up money and territory
d. Battle of Jena- Defeats Prussia
e. Battle of Friedland - defeat of Russia
