The Spread of Imperialism
Causes
1. Economic motive- trade
2. National Pride
3. Domestic factors- Jingoism(Nationalist style of journaling), pressure groups, “social
imperialism”
4. Ideology- scientific racism (Used science to prove europeans were superior humans-
pseudoscience), civilization mission- it was the europeans calling to bring civilization to
the world
5. Technology(made the spread of imperialism easier)- Firearms, steam ships, telegraphs,
quinine (treatment for malaria)
Types of Imperialism
1. Complete dependence- mother country only cared about the resources in the territory
a. Congo Free State- Belgium- enslaved population to harvest rubber
2. Semi-autonomous- Tried to improve colonies- let locals have some power
a. Ex. British India
3. Spheres of Influence- country remains independent but is influenced by mother country
a. Ex. China, Turkey, Persia
Imperialism in Asia
1. India
a. The rise of the East India Company- controlled the economy in india
b. The Indian rebellion (1857)- East India company started to form its own
government so the people revolted- British army put down the rebellion
c. The creation of the Raj- heavier british control
2. China
Growing Isolation- internal issues made them vulnerable to colonization
