HIST 4451 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Antonio De Nebrija, Alumbrados, Purgatory
Document Summary
Church saw the rise of spain as a power: pope sixtus iv was very pro spain. Ferdinand will have an ambassador to rome, london, paris, etc: the ambassadors will write in code for what they don"t want people to see. Spain gets its own inquisition because of the large numbers of jews and muslims: supposed to find those who converted to christianity and prevent those from going back to their old ways. Spain hadn"t kicked the jews out but they were suspected of killing christians by poisoning wells causing the plague. They could go back and start worshiping the old ways. Ferdinand and isabella appointed people to the inquisition instead of wealthy nobles. They get their own inquisition: only against christians who had converted, if you converted in 1492, you were definitely a suspect. That was when you had to convert or leave. The inquisition lasted so long, because regular spaniards liked it.
