SOC 2805 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Alkaline Battery, Wax Paper, Toughened Glass
Paper Waste and Reuse
• The average American uses seven trees a year in paper, wood, and other products made
from trees.
• Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three
cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This
represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air
pollution!
Litter in America
• Litter cleanup costs the U.S. almost $11.5 billion each year, with businesses paying $9.1
billion. Governments and other organizations pick up the remainder.
• Community economy and quality of life suffer. The presence of litter in a community
takes a toll on quality of life, property values, and housing prices. Litter in a community
decreases property values 7%.
• Litter has environmental consequences. Wind and weather, traffic, and animals move
litter into gutters, lawns and landscaped areas, alleyways, and parking structures. Debris
may be carried by storm drains into local waterways, with potential for serious
Recycle, Reduce, Reuse
• What you can do?
Recyclable Items
• Clear glass containers
• Colored glass containers
• High-grade office paper
• Newsprint
• Corrugated paper/cardboard
• Aluminum cans
• Steel and bi-metallic cans
• Plastics (#1 or 2)
Non-Recyclable Items
• Ceramic items and tempered glass
• Light Bulbs, Syringes, Needles)
• Styrofoam, foam meat/produce trays, egg cartons
• Plastics - plastic food wrap or plastics without the recyclable #
• Paper towels, tissue paper, toilet paper, wax paper
• Soiled cardboard (like greasy pizza boxes)
• Alkaline batteries
• Computer and electronic equipment
How to Reduce…
• Most desirable because reducing the amount of stuff we use has the least impact on the
environment.
