SOC 2805 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Deuterocanonical Books, Masoretic Text, Vulgate
Document Summary
Basics on the canon of the christian bible. There is no debate over the new testament canon, but there is over the books which are called deuterocanonical (or which protestants often call apocrypha. Sometimes there is also another term used, and they care called the ecclesiastical books)- those books from the later period in the old testament/hebrew bible, which are found in the septuagint (lxx). The old testament canon was established by the lxx between 400-200 bc. Questions about the deuterocanonical books within the christian community did not arise until the reformation, when they were rejected, more or less, by most protestants who used the jews" Masoretic text for the old testament rather than the list of texts found in the lxx or latin. The reason for doing so was, again, primarily because of a few passages which seemed to favor the roman catholic church"s teachings on points to which many protestants felt very strongly opposed.
