ANSC 3323 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Artificial Insemination, Genetic Testing, Adult Stem Cell
Document Summary
Ovarian cumulus, etc: early embryonic cells are totipotent. Can give rise to any different cell types: already differentiated cells can be made totipotent again via nuclear reprogramming. Nuclear reprogramming: process of reversing a differentiated nuclear to totipotent status, capable of directing normal development and differentiation. Research: gene function & genome activation. Human therapeutic cloning: purpose is to generate not an individual, but healthy tissues or organs. A single cell that can replicate itself or differentiate into many cell types. Origin of human pluripotent stem cells: embryonic stem cells are derived from the inner cell mass of the pre-implantation embryo. Called embryonic stem cells: embryonic germ cells are derived from primordial germ cells isolated from the embryonic gonad. Called adult stem cells: embryonal carcinoma cells are derived from primordial germ cells in the embryonic gonad but usually are detected as components of testicular tumors in adults.
