Document Summary

Somatotropic axis & muscle: overall, with increased gh (across a variety of species), we see: Decreased glucose clearance: central gh dogma. No direct effects of gh on cell proliferation or protein turnover. Hypox-rats with antibody to gh or low gh. Gh & muscle mass decreases with age, but injected gh at any age will increase muscle mass. Gh and muscle mass increase with exercise, no real change with exercise and injected gh. With humans in space, muscle mass decreases. Gh plus exercise restores most muscle mass: muscle cells have gh receptors. Decreased gh receptors on muscle with decreased nutrition. In nutrient deficit, the activity/action of gh on muscle is reduced: receptor numbers may reflect gh action at a more local level. Local increase in igf i within the muscle cells or local increase in igf in nearby cells (especially fibroblasts) Gh stimulates glucose: igf in muscle. + once embryos are born, they die of respiratory failure.
