Document Summary

Anth 1000 - lecture 1 - an introduction to anthropology. Anthropology is the study of human beings and our diversity. It consists of the types of people we identify as and the values we hold. It involves applying knowledge to help us understand each other better. Understanding what motivates people to do what they do allows us to reconcile arguments, put aside differences and help other people. Anthropology approaches the study of humans in a unique way. It looks at people from a global stance. It uses what is called a bottom up approach, which means that it starts by studying the people at the bottom of the pyramid so to speak. These are the people who are not in power and don"t have the authority in their culture. They may be of a poor socioeconomic class or simply may not have access to the same level of education or technology that those in power and/or with authority do.
