○ Bifacial tools - two sided

○ At the beginning, they were scavangers
○ With the A tools, they were able to adapt better to their environment
○ They did control fire at this point
○ Spread out of africa
§ Going off to europe and asia
§ 1.8 MYA
- Neanderthals
○ Not that far from homo sapian
○ Europe
○ Around 200k year ago
○ They were pretty complex - unlike the traditional view
○ Potential sharing between them and erectus - culture beginning?
○ Complex hunting techniques
○ They have their own tool technology
○ They were sophisticated hunters
○ They worked well together
○ Had to not disturb animals
○ They did die out
○ They used Mousterian Technology
§ More complex technology than Achuelian
○ They had some sort of artic body type - colder climate
