BIOL 1107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Uric Acid, Renal Artery, Cystic Fibrosis
Document Summary
Arteriosclerosis: hardening of arterial wall due to aging, leads to heart attack or stroke. Atherosclerosis: narrowing of artery because of plaque build-up due to unhealthy diet and lack of exercise, leads to heart attack or stroke. Ventricular scarring is more serious than aortic scarring; left ventricle scarring is more serious than right ventricle. Different habitats pose different problems in maintaining water and electrolyte balances. Metabolic waste: generated through protein metabolism, removed through sweat and kidneys (not through large intestine like solid waste) Electrolyte: compound that dissociates into ions when dissolved in water (we don"t make these ions, but cells need precise concentrations of them): na+, Water movement is controlled by pumping ions across the membrane. Separate solutes in water to make favorable gradient for water to move across membrane. Aim to reach equilibrium with respect to water concentration. Osmoregulation: regulate water movement to regulate concentrations of water and salt in the body.
