Document Summary

Surface area doesn"t increase at the same rate as volume in all matter. Multi-cellular organisms developed organ systems to have the ability to transport nutrients and oxygen and remove waste throughout body efficiently, regardless of large size of organism. Organ systems are the reason we can grow so large. Metabolic rate: energy consumption by individual (sum total of exothermic and endothermic reactions) Standard metabolic rate (smr): reptiles, amphibians, fish- their body temperatures are influenced by the outside environment. Base metabolic rate (bmr): mammals and birds- rate an animal consumes oxygen while at rest- can generate enough heat internally to maintain constant body temperature relative to outside environment. Every animal shown in this curve is a mammal. The bigger you are, the less you need to consume. The smaller you are, the more you need to consume. Heat energy moves from hot to cold temperatures to try to reach an equilibrium.
