Core concept 3: xylem allows vascular plants to replace water evaporated from leaves with water pulled from the soil. Thick-walled cells that add mechanical strength to the stem. The vascular tissue system: xylem and phloem. Xylem anatomy: xylem functions in the long distance transport of water from roots to shoots (tips, tracheids: original evolution, survive freezing. Xylem is found on the inside of vascular bundles: xylem is also a complex tissue that has four cell types: Tracheary elements the water conducting cells (two types: tracheids and vessel elements) There are two type of tracheary elements: tracheids are dead, long, narrow cells bearing pits on side walls and end walls. Spindle shaped and have pits: vessel elements are dead cells with open end walls (no pit membrane remains) called perforation plates; shorter and wider than tracheids.
