Document Summary

Avery welch organic chemistry week 5 lecture 10 chapter 5 2/15/16. Has to have a hydrogen and a heteroatom. Oh, nh, sh, etc. could be amphoteric. Know what amphoterism is and the general parameters. Slide 3: not very much that he can test us on here. Slide 4: molecules that are associated not necessarily covalently bonded, larger surface area larger van der waal"s interaction, london forces interactions of the electrons in the bonds in hydrocarbons. Slide 10: don"t memorize this table, we will be asked to circle the one with lowest/highest boiling point, everything that can hydrogen bond, can"t, etc. Slide 11: like dissolves like, polar = good for water, nonpolar = not good for water. Need heteroatoms to make a molecule nonpolar. Slide 15: the more you can pack molecules into a regular crystal lattice, the higher the melting point, the more amorphous, the lower the melting point.
