Document Summary

Avery welch organic chemistry week 3 lecture 6 chapter 3 2/1/16. Slide 1: measuring heat generated/consumed by the reaction, could be endothermic or exothermic (going to be sort of irrelevant to us) Slide 3: we ignore ionic bonds in these equation, only focus on covalent bonds, the 67 kcal bond is more reactive. The bond should be harder to break but it"s easier. Reaction doesn"t go back the other way: 50 kcal bond is weaker, but in this case is more stable. Slide 6: symmetrical bond is stronger, unsymmetrical bond easier to break, polarized bonds react generally faster than unpolarized bonds, when in doubt, polarize. If you don"t know what something is likely to do, see if there is a polarized bond. Slide 7: cf is more polarized & is probably more reactive based on this observation, cn is less polarized. Slide 8: you cannot assume the more polarized bond is more reactive.
