Symbolic: can"t see but can feel effects of (language, religion, law) Material: can see, touch, and feel (housing, costumes, foods) Material side of a cultural (objects and techniques) Kinship systems (relatives), religious expression, economic organization, military, etc. Ideas, beliefs, knowledge of culture and expression of that knowledge, communication. Objects (like clothes) can belong to all three (artifact as covering, sociofact as position in society shown by clothes, and mentifact as expression of knowledge) Can be improvements in material technology, social structures, or new beliefs. Went from hunter-gatherers to pastoral nomadism and subsistence agricultural to industrial revolution. Any society"s productive technology determines its economic system which in turn determines its political system and beliefs and ideals. Technology will continue to raise the standards of living for human populations. Degree of control over the environment rather than environment itself essential to understanding society.
