What does FILM (making/watching) have to do with sexism or feminism?
Women in the U.S. MOVIE industry:
Up to the 1950s/early 1960s:
• Few women directors, no producers
• Feale characters: look good and not be heard
• Supporting roles: home maker, sexy vamp, damselle in distress, etc.
1970 feminist scholar and film critic Laura Mulvey: male gazes of the camera,
audience, and protagonist objectify female on screen as sex object. Some changes
came w/Doris Day, Katherine Hepburn, etc. in 1960s
Today:
• Some (but still few) women directors in Hollywood
• Female roles have broadened
• More sensitivity to gender issues including LGBTQ
• Adjustment to contemporary
