Adaptations: reducing demands, changing family meanings of interpretations of important experiences. I am an active force inside this system: even if i am being discriminated against, even if everything is not fair, not a pure victim, can see one part that they made happen or a choice they made. If they see that they affected change negatively, then they can possibly see that they can affect change positively. Some shred of responsibility = it moves it towards optimism from helplessness: how you have heard and interpreted stories your whole life, what you have seen before you, example of first generation college students. Are we going to be okay: narratives, by constructing a narrative we make an experience knowable, integrate it into our life, and then access it as a memory. Story provides a structure for what happened: evaluating which aspects are important or unusual, how does the person situation themselves, give meaning to the other people,
