Document Summary

Tough, outer, fibrous layer (resistant to distention) Between the 2 = pericardial cavity with 30-50 ml of serous fluid lubricant, friction as the heart contacts and relaxes. Epicardium = outer layer; lines pericardial cavity; also inner layer of 2-layered pericardium of visceral pericardium. Endocardium = inner layer; s(cid:373)ooth, li(cid:374)es the heart"s (cid:272)ha(cid:373)(cid:271)ers. Blood flow: right side: deoxy blood delivered back from body. Lungs alveoli left side of heart body. No blood flowing back into atrium, flows out of ventricles. Mitral and tricuspid open, blood flows into ventricles. Isometric contraction: av valves close - s 1. Ejection: semilunar valves close - s 2 (after = esv) Right side of heart only squeezing blood to lungs. Left side of heart pushes to deliver blood to rest of body. Volume of blood ejected per minute by rhythmic ventricle contraction: co = sv x hr, averages 4l - 8l/min, adults 150 # = 5l-6l/min, measured with pulmonary artery catheter (swan-ganz)
