NURS 3664 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Pulse Oximetry, Blood Gas Tension, Oxygen Saturation
Document Summary
Measurement of the percentage of how much hemoglobin is saturated with oxygen. 97% of oxygen bound to hemoglobin; 3% dissolved in plasma. Byproduct of cellular metabolism; collects in tissues; cleared from tissues by blood within the veins. Removed from body via lungs in exhaled air. Partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood. Shows how well oxygen is able to move from the lungs to the blood. Changes in partial pressure can result in less oxygen getting into the blood and more carbon dioxide accumulating in the blood. Factors affecting levels: obstructions in respiratory tree of lungs; concentration of hemoglobin in blood; condition of heart. Not enough oxygen passes from lungs into blood. Result of one or more disorders involving lungs or other body systems. V = ventilation air breathed in through the nose and mouth, down the trachea into bronchi and on to alveoli where oxygen and co2 exchange.
