Document Summary

Avery welch philosophy/gender week 9 3/21/16-3/25/16. The group constitutes the individual: objection: eliminate social groups to eliminate oppression. Have to get rid of social groups to get rid of oppression. Someone might think that oppression is based in groups because: the generalizations of groups, we put things in categories. With categories it makes it easier to think everyone in that category is the same. Young"s response: we shouldn"t have to get rid of identities, we should respect people, that is the wrong approach to it, the category itself is oppressing. It"s not the social groups it"s what we do to those social groups that is the problem. Misidentifying the source of the harm: like saying domestic violence is due to two person relationships and so we should get rid of them. Correlation does not equal causation, and there are plenty of two person relationships that are okay. Social groups are an important part of people"s identities.
