Document Summary

Long distance communication using wires based on conduction of impulses. Central nervous system = brain + spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system = cranial + spinal nerves + ganglia. Sensory division - receives info from and sends it to the cns. Somatic - body (usually referring to the skin) Motor division - sends motor info to effectors. Sensory neurons transmits info from receptors to the cns. Motor neurons transmits info from the cns to the rest of the body. White matter - due to myelin, consists if myelinated and unmyelinated axons. Gray matter - cell bodies, usually also means synapses. Tract - collection of axons (white matter) traveling within the cns. Nerve - collection of axons (white matter) traveling within the pns. Nucleus - collection of cell bodies and synapses (grey matter) within the cns. Ganglion - collection of cell bodies and synapses (grey matter) outside the cns. Dorsal root ganglia have only cell bodies, no synapses.
