Efferent innervation of tissues other than skeletal muscle. Somatic = voluntary while autonomic = involuntary (reflexes are exceptions) Glands (salivary glands, secretion, acid production in stomach, etc) Effector organs = smooth or cardiac muscles, glands, or gi neurons. Innervation of target organs is typically paired (dual innervation) Postganglionic neuron - trunks span spinal column cervical to sacral. Majority of the postsynaptic fibers originate here. Directly adjacent to the spinal cord on both sides. Inserted into organs/glands of head, heart, lungs. Preganglionic neuron - originates in cranial nerves and sacral region of the spinal cord. Oculomotor - controls eye movement, lacrimal glands (tear production) Facial - taste and facial expression, control salivary glands for saliva production. Glossopharyngeal - controls tongue, stimulates salivary glands. Vagus - and then like everything else. Ganglia are found in the abdominal cavity close to target organs (near reproductive tract) Axons pass by the chain ganglia, do not stop and synapse at the collateral ganglia.
