Psychic energy- the biologically based, instinctual drives that energize behavior, Erogenous zones- areas of the body that become erotically sensitive in successive. Constant conflict between desire to meet sexual urges and realities of living. Personality as a construct is a pattern of enduring distinctive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that characterize the way an individual adapts to the world. Sigmund freud"s psychoanalytic theory has had greater impact on western culture and on thinking about social and personality development than any other psychological theory. Psychosexual development- a series of early childhood stages in which psychic energy becomes focused in different erogenous zones thoughts, and feelings stages of development. Adult personality is determined by the way we resolve conflicts between sources of pleasure at each stage and the demands of reality. Source of sexual pleasure is someone outside of the family. Interest in sexuality is repressed/channeled into socially acceptable activities. Balances demands from id and restrictions from superego.
