PSYC 1103 Lecture 5: Developmental Psychology
Document Summary
Many early theorists argued that children were passive beings that took. Now more theorists are recognizing that children are active in their own little initiative in their development development. Attention patterns (can choose what to direct attention towards) Psychomotor learning (learning cause-and-effect through their movements, such as kicking or throwing their toys) Eliciting behavior from others (observing responses to certain behaviors) Play (putting oneself in another"s shoes and pretending to be someone else allows a child to understand other perspectives) Ex: instead of having playdates arranged by parents, adolescents choose what people they want to spend time with. Some psychologists believe that children will not reach their full potential without proper care and nurturing in the first year of life. Ex: freud believed strongly in the importance of early childhood experience. Later experience advocates argue that children are responsive to change. All people have resilience the ability to recover and adapt from difficult times.
