Document Summary
Social cognition : the ways in which people think about their own and others". Understanding others also referred to as theory of mind, social-perspective thoughts, feelings and beliefs (how we think about the social world) taking, etc. Helps in both positive and negative ways. Ex: gift giving, feeling empathy, getting in another"s head during an argument, deceiving others. Ex: participant is offered broccoli or goldfish and chooses goldfish, the researcher then chooses broccoli and shows her clear preference for broccoli. The researcher then asks the child to give her a piece of either broccoli or goldfish, and child with theory of mind (understanding of others) give the researcher broccoli instead of goldfish. Understanding others" beliefs (even those that are false) Ex: assuming a person will assume an object is in a place other than where they left it, despite not seeing the object being moved while they were gone.
