Document Summary

Darwin"s theory of evolution could not explain ornaments of nature, like the peacocks tail or colorful beatles, butterflies, and songs of birds. Males have competition for reproduction while females choose. Darwin"s contemporaries had a problem with the idea that female animals choose. Therefore, peacock tail and eye spots are seen as attractive by peahens and other. If you shorten peacock tails and remove eyes they are less attractive potential mates. Male pipefish give birth, not the females. Females are responsible for depositing eggs into the male brood pouch, inseminating him. Attractive females are larger, lay more eggs, and are sexually responsive. Unnattractive females are smaller, lay fewer eggs, and are less sexually responsive. If male mates with less attractive female he will abort more embryos and withhold nutrients than if he mated with a more attractive female. Restoration of male mating behavior when the original female is replaced with a novel female.
