2 aspects of noise in signals transmitted over distances: Degredation: change in structure or detail of signal. Detection: discriminate presence or absence of signal. Recognition: discriminate among classes and variations of signal. Relationship between aspects of noise and receiver"s tasks. The cocktail party effect: signal-to-noise ratio (raise our voice at a party so we can be heard) The dawn chorus advantages: less wind, foraging after dawn (busy), obtain territories after overnight predation (claim a territory before someone else does) Timing of the dawn chorus: everyone displays signal at different times so there is no attenuation! Lowest frequency of great tit song is 2800 hz. Urban noise is introduced, and now the minimum frequency is 3700 hz. Trying to overcome the network clutter of urban noise by raising minimum frequency. Loudspeakers over phantom road (no physical road) in quiet area of idaho during migratory season. Counted the number of birds in noisy area vs. non-noisy area.
