SLHS 2203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Epiglottis, Thyroid, Hyoid Bone
Document Summary
Laryngeal model due 2/13 (week from tuesday) Starting first with the bone (yellow) and cartilage (blue) The epiglottis is on the posterior side of the larynx, in this picture it is peaking up from behind. Protective effect of the epiglottis : during swallowing, epiglottis can rop to cover the larynx. Suspended just beneath the mandible (lower jaw bone) Floating: not directly connected to other bones. Together with its attached muscles, the hyoid bone has two important functions: It holds up the tongue, which sits above it. And it holds up the larynx, which hangs below it. The hyoid bone is the equivalent of the wishbone in a turkey. Place each index finger just in front of your ears, on your jaw bone, just near the top of your ear lobes. Slowly run your fingers down under your jaw bone and then into the base of your tongue until you feel two smooth lumps on each side.
