WGSS 1124 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Environmental Movement, Global Justice Movement, World Trade Organization
Document Summary
The market : the market and capitalism have become hegemonic. Implicit in current discourse is an idea that globalization is natural inevitable determined by market logic: hegemony: Domination, influence, authority over another, especially one political group over a society or by nation over others. When a discourse is hegemonic it conforms to the dominant ideology, which justifies the status quo: hegemonic ideological propositions are not simply instruments of domination but also a toolkit that can be used for subversive ends. Counterhegemonic globalization: counter hegemonic globalization challenges the prevailing system of transnational domination and the ideologies that justify it. Feminism shows that patriarchy and class under capitalism have determined a monolithic conception of (white male) dominance, a supposed meritocracy that favors privileged individuals. Strict capitalism rewards talent and success and punishes struggle and failure, regardless of effort, social positioning and ability. World economic forum vs. world social forum: world social forum.
