During the 1970"s and 80"s, it was a formative time for studies of sexuality in feminist. There were two dominant models: radical feminists, masculinist/mainstream. Make same conclusions about female same sex conclusions and male same sex conclusions But this was proven to not be useful. Coming out of the 1970"s, postmodern and queer theories, along with non-dominant same sex female practices countered both models. Lesbian cannot be used as a global signifier, and it"s problematic because it connotes that there is a fixed sexual identity. If you identity as lesbian, it becomes an exclusive sexuality practice. Lesbian also marks a sexual practice and makes gender expressions invisible. It desnt encompass diversity of female gender and sexul identites. Limit how we can explore this notion of gender and sex. This term only holds historical significance in the west. Female same-sex relations is a term suggested by blackwood.
