Marked by social upheavel, political conflicts, technological modernization, artistic innovation, rising mass culture. Gains popularity with vienna secession (when artists withdrew from vienna"s (austria) main art union, collectively united against traditional representation: portrait painting, landscape painting) Expressionism: style of painting in which artist seeks to depict emotion (internal world). Opposite of impressionism, which sought to depict impressions of external world. Multiple points of view- across space and time. Rejects traditional linear perspective, chiaroscuro, idea of imitating nature. Aesthetic and cultural attitude found throughout modern art, literature, music, dance of western europe and north america. Interested in a time before modernity --> inspired by african/indigenous cultures cultures. "primitive" = often eroticized, seen as a lost paradise. Deeply racist and dismissive of cultural traditions of non-europeans; white supremacy and white straight male artistic "genius"
