Having feminist beliefs and ideals before feminism was created. American regionalism - tension between city and country. Rooted in social realism, realistic scenes in rural america. Considered true americanness but now seen as conservative and focuses on white americans only. Response to great depression, defining american art - nationalism, trying to differentiate from european art/abstract. African americans migrating up to northern states to find jobs and new lifestyles. Trying to redefine what it means to be black and what it means to be american, embrace culture. Midwest - less judgement, more isolation and security.
