• Eto: spits on Ichiro
• Community: turns his back on Ichiro
• Mom: hates everyone including Ichiro; not maternal
• Taro: Ichiro’s younger brother; considers himself American & not
Japanese
• Freddie (p.45): another no-no boy; got out of jail 5 weeks ago
(ahead of Ichiro in terms of healing/apathy process); Ichiro’s
doppelganger; very confident in this moment; slacker; Ichiro feels
that his only options in the next few weeks are mom, dad or
Freddie- not great choices
• Kenji (p. 53): PTSD from war; doesn’t question Ichiro about
fighting in war; suicidal → Ichiro angry bc thought being in Kenji’s
position would make all of his problems disappear
• Bull (p. 74): American assimilation; like the animal (knows only
forward & reverse); is full of BS
• Emi (p. 77): her husband, Ralph, still fighting in WWII; Kenjie
takes Ichiro to meet her bc the 2 of them have both lost
something; opposite of Ichiro’s mom (Mother Nature, provider,
full body); Kenji sending in Ichiro so Emi can sleep with a man
