It was thought that only the epithelial cells of the prostate could become cancerous. Psa prevents sperm from becoming clumped together, coming from the prostate epithelial cells. In normal cells only a small amount of psa leaks into the bloodstream. Cells in the prostate are healthy and organized in a tight pattern. With prostate cancer, the cells are more disorganized and the layers between the prostate and blood vessel become disrupted. Therefore, measuring the amount of psa in the bloodstream can help to detect prostate cancer.
