Bearer of sovereignty, symbol of popular solidarity, object of supreme loyalty. Basis of nationalism: territory, language, traditions, history, race, ethnicity. State : agency with monopoly on use of legitimate violence. Nations and states contingent (195 states; 5,000+ nations) Nationalism says noncontingent = each incomplete without the other. Four stages of its positive development: community of origin, community of opinion = shared ways of thinking, community of status, community of the people. Sacred language: particular language offers privileged access to truth of reality. Dynastic dispensation: monarch gets power from god. Cosmological time: notion of the temporal in which the historical and cosmological are the same. Invisible = no one knows all who belong to collective identity they claim as their own. Limited = boundaries of nation defined by limits that cannot be fully represented.
