Exploit stream of consciousness (unorganized flow of thought processes) Moving perception back out of man-locked sets . Moving toward what remains primeval in our formalized humanity . Reflects age of disbelief where people experience the death of many. Seek a reality not ourselves, something wholly other, to break the loneliness of thinking . Ex: change of appeal of african art more than aesthetic longings and moral values that the western soul is in need of. Global reach of arts = west and east art exchanged. Avante-garde is leading edge; dadaism is ironic protest against wwi and the society that produced it. Supported anything that could outrage bourgeois (middle class) taste.
